Conditions We Treat
Chronic pain is described as an on-going pain lasting for more than 6 months. The management of chronic pain is very difficult due to poor understanding of its cause and lack of adequate facilities to help patient live a good quality of life. Chronic pain is associated with muscle weakness, joint stiffness, lack of stamina, and lack of sleep, frustration and poor coping methods. In most cases, this condition does not respond to treatment. The management of this condition requires various health care professionals. Physiotherapy plays major roles in the management of this condition. However, the traditional physiotherapy methods of treating chronic pain have been less successful. At Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, we have experienced specialist therapists to help our patient achieve a good quality of life. Specifically, we work together with our patients to set achievable and realistic goals. One of the goals is aimed at restoring normal body function and activities and prevention of secondary avoidable complications associated with this condition.
Some of our strategies involve exercises to strengthen muscles, restoring joint flexibility, relaxation, acupuncture and massage. Our patients play a major role in achieving their goals. We expect our patient to be actively involved in the rehabilitation programme. We also engage and educate the family and friend in the process.
Sports Injuries Such As Joint, Ligament And Muscle Injuries
Sprain injuries affect the ligaments of the joint. They are associated with over-stretching of the ligaments causing pain, swelling and instability of the joint affected. Strains are muscle and tendon injuries. It usually occurs as a result of overuse of a particular muscle of a joint. At Uplands Rehabilitation Centre we are experienced in the assessment of our patients in order to identify the cause and offer an appropriate Physiotherapy treatment approach to relieve the symptoms.
Ligament problems are common in the joints of the body especially in the lower limbs. In our clinic we offer thorough assessment and appropriate treatment technique to help our patients.
Our Physiotherapy treatment plan usually involves the use of electrotherapy modalities along with exercise to improve muscle strength and thus reduce recurrence of injury in future.

The overarching aim of Uplands Rehabilitation Centre is to provide high standards of neurorehabilitation physiotherapy care to improve our patient’s quality of life, by maximising the potential of the affected parts of the body.
Every patient with a neurological disorder is affected differently, and therefore the neurological physical therapy provided will be tailored to the patient’s needs to help them improve their health. Neurological patients may have difficulties in walking, balance, coordination and everyday activities. Our neurology physiotherapists, neurorehabilitation occupational therapists and speech and language therapists are specialised in treating a wide range of conditions.
Common conditions treated at our neuro rehabilitation centre include Stroke, Parkinsons disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, post- operative brain surgery, peripheral nerve injuries, and many more. The main approaches to treating neurological disorders are known as Bobath (normal movement), The Carr and Shepherd (motor relearning), Signe Brunnstrom (Synergic pattern of movement) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.
As a specialist neuro rehab centre, at Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, every patient is seen privately on a one-to-one basis by our specialist neuro physiotherapists, neurorehabilitation occupational therapists and speech and language therapists. Each session involves assessment of the patient by our specialist therapists, who will then produce a treatment plan. The aim of our neurorehabilitation occupational therapy treatment plans is to try and make the patient as independent as possible in everyday tasks. We also give advice to the patient and their family on how to perform neuro physical therapy exercises correctly. This would enable the patient to safely conduct exercises at home.
The URC frequently receives individuals from National and Regional rehabilitation units to continue their rehabilitation. On other occasions Uplands Rehabilitation Centre will take individuals who have been recommended to go to national or regional units but have chosen to stay within Essex or feel that, as the URC has a lower number of beds than many of those units, are able to provide a more bespoke and person centred approach.
This injury is associated with sudden forceful backwards and forwards movement of head on neck during a road traffic accident. The movement could cause injury to the muscles, ligaments, tendon, the discs and occasional fracture in the neck region. This injury results in stiffness, spasm, instability, head and neck pain. Physiotherapists play major roles during the acute and the long term management of this injury. At Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, we carry out thorough assessment of our patients in order to help resolve the problems. We are skilled in recognising how this injury affects an individual as well as how to manage it. We offer a physiotherapy treatment approach that helps to restore movement, relieve pain and spasm and prevent complications.
We also provide reports to the third party if our patient requests such reports. We expect our patients to trust our judgement and help us to help them. Specifically, we expect our patient to carry out the exercise programme that we design for them in order to achieve quick recovery.
Acute low back pain can be caused by many factors such as injuries. Such injuries sometimes affect the discs (causing sciatica), muscles, ligament and joints of the back. Sciatica is the pain that is spread to the buttocks or leg depending on the level of discs that are affected. Inadequate managing of the acute low back pain could lead to ongoing pain/chronic pain. We offer thorough assessment and apply prompt physiotherapy treatment to manage the pain as well as prevent it from becoming chronic. Our method of assessment involves finding out the source of pain particularly to determine if the pain is mechanical (due to muscles, disc, or joint of the back). Physiotherapy treatment is therefore directed towards the appropriate structures. We also provide information to our patient on ways to minimise re-injuring of the back.
Degenerative disc disease is a wear and tear changes taking place in the back. It usually attributed to aging process.
Degenerative disc disease is not limited to elderly population alone. It can start from younger population as well just as developing a grey heir can be found in the younger age group. It usually develops dues to the disc in the spine losing its water content and become less flexible. This process leads to joint stiffness, pain and weakness of back muscles and abdominal muscles.
At Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, we work with the patient to restore the flexibility of the joints of the back, improve the strength of your back muscles as well as core abdominal muscle strength. One of the common findings in this condition is the lack of endurance of back muscles leading to early fatigue with subsequent painful back. We will work together to design coping physiotherapy strategies to manage this type of pain.
Pre And Post-Operative Joints Replacements Rehabilitation
Post-operative care can trace its origins in convalescence type care but involves so much more care and support. Often individuals are discharged from hospital but are not yet fully independent to look after themselves at home and would benefit from after operation care.
Uplands Rehabilitation Centre specialises in pre and post operative nursing care working with individuals who require or would benefit from rehabilitation after surgery by supporting them with the skills and activities necessary for daily living.
For individuals who have experienced neurological and complex orthopaedic impairments as a result of injury or illness, Uplands Rehabilitation Centre provides pre and post operative nursing care that rebuilds independence and promotes optimum recovery.
As experts in rehabilitation after surgery, Uplands Rehabilitation Centre will help manage an individual’s recovery to help to reduce the risk of complications and further hospital admissions. Its expertise can help individuals who have received hospital based therapy but have not been able to return to their previous level of function. Essentially without post operative nursing care and support rehabilitation they would not be able to return home or would need a significant package of care.
Uplands Rehabilitation Centre has expertise in providing both pre operative care and post operative care, specifically for patients who have had a:
Total Hip Replacement
Total Knee Replacement
Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
Shoulder Replacement
post-operative hip fracture rehabilitation operation
In addition, Uplands Rehabilitation Centre provides excellent post operative physiotherapy for patients that have undergone back and neck surgery and require rehabilitation after surgery.
Our post operative treatment sees us working with patients to restore the joint range of movement, muscle strength, gait re-education (walking pattern), balance training and pain management. Following our assessment, we will design a treatment plan for our patients.
The treatment plan will involve specific exercise to help in improving the symptoms and restore function; supporting individuals to ‘do things for themselves’ rather than ‘having things done for them’. We are also able to provide urgent post operative care.
The intensive rehabilitation after surgery programme at Uplands Rehabilitation Centre may last from as little as a few days to a couple of weeks; progress is reviewed by the multi-disciplinary team on a frequent basis.
Frozen shoulder is associated with pain, stiffness and loss of function. It may arise as a result of injury or surgical procedure in the shoulder region. Effective physiotherapy treatment of this condition is based on adequate physiotherapy assessment and treatment and dedicated effort of the patient. At Uplands Rehabilitation Centre, we carry out thorough assessment of our patient, carry out a design treatment approach based on our findings during assessment; guide our patient on the best method to achieve quick recovery. Our physiotherapy treatment approach is based on the proven scientific evidence.
As the name implies, these injures are due to accumulation of stress over time that placed on soft tissues due to repeated use. The injury can affect any joint in the body, particularly, neck, hands, arm, shoulder, knee, and legs. The affected joint develops an imbalance in the muscle strength and flexibility leading to further strain.
In our facility, we provide detailed assessment of the affected part. We offer advice and administer appropriate hands-on physiotherapy treatment techniques to reduce the pain.
Our therapists are experienced in the arts and science of sports massage and specific soft tissue mobilisation such as muscles, tendons and ligaments. Following any soft tissue injuries and injury to bones and joints, massage could aid quick recovery as well as quick return to activities. Massage is also used in the management of painful chronic conditions. It is generally believed that massage can improve patients mood, reduce anxiety as well as produce some relaxation and subsequently helps both acute and chronic pain.
Acupuncture treatment was developed in China. It is gaining popularity in the treatment of some medical condition. Acupuncture is a systematic insertion of fine needles into a specific part of body to produce both physiological and psychological effects with subsequent therapeutic benefit. Some of the benefits of acupuncture include pain relief, addictions and hormonal changes. It is believed that acupuncture helps by controlling the flow of energy in the body. In our clinic, we will assess suitability our patients prior to offering them this treatment.
We also provide other therapy services including:
- Exercise programme tailored to the needs of our patients. Exercises are designed to restore joint movement, improve muscle strength and muscle endurance.
- Specific Soft Tissue Mobilisation Techniques: These hands-on techniques are beneficial to manage pain due to muscle, tendons and ligaments.
- Manual Therapies: Manual therapy is hand-on techniques that are carried out to restore fine joint movement as a result of stiffness causing pain.
